A WIFE

24 08 2012

Sometimes a wife just has to step in and change things.  My husband was 21 years old and already a great salesman.  He was working downtown as the floor salesman and loved his job.  He enjoyed meeting all the new people who came into the store and loved the learning part of the business.

Every day I prepared his lunch.  Most of the other men went out for lunch to nearby restaurants.  I thought to myself that it was time for him to do that too.  I knew he would resent it if I mentioned it to him, so I just made some really awful lunches.  He hated ground up meat sandwiches so that was what I fixed for a few days.  Didn’t take long until he came in one afternoon and said, ‘I didn’t eat my lunch that you fixed today.  I threw it in the wastebasket instead.  Then I went out to eat with the other guys’. I asked him why and he said he didn’t like those sandwiches I had been fixing in his lunch and he wasn’t going to eat that anymore.  I acted like it sort of upset me, but inside I was grinning all over.

After that, he never even mentioned taking his lunch again. I was glad because I didn’t have to fix it anyway, but I was especially glad that he had taken that upward step to be one of the guys and go out for lunch.  He couldn’t progress in his job if he had to always be in the office to eat his prepared lunch.  Hooray!  A step forward in his young life.

He went on to become a traveling salesman for many years and was a very successful young man.  I was always very proud and still am today.  And I will be forever glad that I fixed those awful lunches!

HOPE AND CHANGE

9 08 2012

We have all heard a million times about hope and change.  Don’t really know what that means.  It took $68 to fill my car with gas this last weekend.  Guess that means I hope, I hope, I hope that changes soon.  Or maybe it means that I no longer get any change from my dollar bills.  Not sure which it means.

I just hope that the change is that those who know the business start drilling for oil in this country so we can have some good, cheap gasoline in the next couple of years.  That shouldn’t be too hard to do.  There is enough oil below the ground to last us all the rest of our lives.   Why are we not using it!  It is time.  I am tired of hearing about the animals that we need to protect.   I’m sure you have seen the bears on the television screen who are so over-abundant that they are stealing candy from the candy store.  It is time to quit all this nonsense and get the good old U.S.A.back to being the country it has been for a long, long time.   Time for everyone to get up in the morning, put their shoes on and go to work.  Time to stop being important and go home and raise a family.  Time to start teaching the children what life is all about and that means responsibility, responsibility, responsibility.

Maybe that is what is meant by the term, Hope and Change.  Sure hope so.  We sure do need some change.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND

21 07 2012

If you are deciding what to do with your life, take a little time to get a little experience before moving on.   My husband was 20 years old and pumping gas in a service station.  He decided he needed a better job so he quit that one and went to work unloading boxcars for a local business.  First thing, he had to join a union and he didn’t care much for that issue.  In the first place, he was not interested in unions, period.  And then, he found he would have to pay union dues whether he liked it or not.  And then, it was hot summer time and he was not an outdoor person.  The heat always bothered him.

He came home after the first day and said he didn’t  know there could be so many crackers in a boxcar.  He kept that job for a few weeks and then decided that pumping gas wasn’t so bad after all, so he quit.  He didn’t really go back to pumping gas but instead went to work for a dairy.  Didn’t take but a couple of days to decide he didn’t care much for that business either.

He cooked lots and lots of hamburgers, but everywhere he went, he was not satisfied with his life.  He drove trucks and did survey work.  Nothing satisfied him.

And then, someone mentioned that a sales job was open in a local business.  He didn’t know anything about sales but was looking for his niche in life.  He got the job and was put on probation while he learned how to sell.  That didn’t take long and he had found where he belonged in this life.  He loved the salesman’s job and soon became quite successful.  He used his selling abilities in every part of his life thereafter.  He eventually began his own business, selling out of the back of his car and was very successful at that, too.   Later on, he rented an office and kept right on selling.  The day came when he could afford to build his own buildings and buy his trucks and cars and hire other salesmen.  So, you see, he had found where he belonged in this life.

He could not have found it if he was sitting in a classroom just thinking about what he might do.  He had to get out there and try for himself and then he could make up his own mind.  He kept after it until he found exactly what he wanted to do in this life.  He was a very happy sales person for all the rest of his days.

Give it a try. Get some experience and then decide what to do with your life.  And then you, too, will be very successful as you will be happy in what you are doing every day.  I would hate to go to work every day and not love what I was doing.  Take your time.  Make up your own mind where you belong in this life.

WHY NOT A VOTECH SCHOOL

13 07 2012

I read in the papers every day about how much a college education costs.  It is absolutely ridiculous as far as I am concerned.  I never was an advocate of a college education.  When I was growing up, no one went to a four year college except those wanting to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer or teacher.  And even the teacher did not have to attend college.  She could go right into the school and learn on the job if they needed her.  And I had some really, really good teachers when I was a youngster.  I received a top notch education in that 12 years between first grade and twelfth grade.  And when I graduated, I was immediately hired in a good job and with a good salary.  Whether anyone wants to admit it today or not, this is the ultimate goal – to have a good job with a good salary.

Nowadays, young people waste a lot of years going after that stupid degree that will not get them a job no matter what they do.  A person should look into the job market first and then decide what degree they want to pursue.  For instance, I would not want to spend my life every single day doing something I really hated.  I had a friend who went to college for four years, got a degree in accounting, went to work and that lasted perhaps a month.  She hated it.  Then she returned to school and became a principal of an elementary school.  Why not check into that possibility first before all that valuable time is wasted.

I raised very successful children and none of them have a college degree.  They didn’t want to waste those precious years going to college.  They wanted to get on with their lives and all did exactly that.  They all had the opportunity but when they got into the college life, they found themselves very bored.  They wanted to get some actual experience.  One of my daughters had been working as a sales person for several years and said her friends were just then coming out of college and having to compete to get a job and then obtain  the experience she already had.

College did not become a popular thing to do until the 1960 crowd took over the parks and recreation areas of this country.  They were lazy and not interested in working on any level.  So they depended on their parents and went to college.  Or else they entered college in order to evade the draft.  So college became a very popular thing to do.  Lots of people followed.  Why not.  It was an easy life, one with no responsibilities, and no real interests in having a better life.  If they whined enough, someone would provide them with something anyway.  So, they drifted and some are still drifting.  Some are on the streets, some in detention facilities, and a few have made the turnaround and managed to get a job and have a decent life.

But why not just avoid all that to begin with.  Enroll or help your children enroll in a Votech School.  There, all kinds of degrees are available. I have one in my family who is learning to be a technician doing ultra-sound technology.  Good salary, too.  Another neighbor became a nurse recently, after going a very short time to a Votech School.  Why waste four precious years.  Plumbers, electricians, and all related fields can be learned at a Votech.  Cost is a lot less too.

One of my children prefers to hire Votech trained workers as they are more willing to work and have more practical experience and want to learn, learn, learn.  This is the point you know.  An employer wants to hire workers who are interested in learning their job and doing it correctly.  And they want someone who will come in on time and work the full day for a full day’s pay.

As I said, This is the point.  A good job at a decent salary to have a good life.  Why not look into attending a Votech.  You might be glad you did.

OK WHAT NOW!

12 07 2012

So many things going on all the time these days.  And most of it just makes me plumb sick.  For instance, the media has made such an issue about the NAACP booing Romney.  I was taught when I was growing up that nice people don’t BOO.  No matter what you thought of the issue or the person or whatever was going on, you were taught not to BOO!  That was simply bad manners.  So, that could have been and should have been handled in a much more civilized manner.  And the media should not be pushing the story, either.  That is also simple bad manners to promote such behavior.  No wonder our children don’t know what good manners are.

And then there is so much going on behind your back these days.  And most people pay no attention whatsoever.  They don’t even realize their country is being taken away, a bit at a time.  Every day.

For instance, this low interest rate that has been going on and on and on.  Supposedly it is supposed to help us.  HA!  That is interesting.  And, of course those in charge know exactly what they are doing, but most of the people in the country do not.  When the interest rate is held at this low rate, it destroys capital.  Period.

We are a capitalistic country and proud of it!  But as they hold the strings so tight on capital, the capital gradually disappears.  As example, a person has saved a dab of money for their old age, hoping to invest it in whatever will bring them a little income.  But there is no interest paid these days on any investments.  So they cannot buy Money Markets or C.D.’s or Bonds.  Because the interest return on them is not worth the risk they would have to take.  So they sit on their money and as they do this, their money gradually disappears.  Soon, it will be worth much less than it was a year ago or even two years ago.

If a town wants to build a school, for example, they would float a bond issue and then sell those bonds and pay a fair amount of interest to the investor.  And then the investor would have a little more money to put in his bank account, maybe even enough to buy his groceries.  And the overall result for everyone would be great.  Because as the school is built, this provides jobs for lot of people.  Then they in turn can buy goods at the local stores and this helps the economy for the whole town.   And then this grows until it provides even more jobs and more money for people as spendable income.

But those in charge these days are holding the money strings very tightly and not allowing anyone to pay any interest on any investments and so the money dries up, slowly but surely.   And do you know what that does to capitalism?  It destroys it slowly but surely and very soon, we will become a socialistic nation and won’t have anything to say about any of it.  And then people will wonder what happened to our capitalistic country.

So now you will know what has happened to our capitalistic country.  It was because of the money handlers, those in charge of the money  that are running our country into the ground these days.  And it is being done while they moan and groan about how the recession might come back if they pay more interest.  BULL!

Also, they moan and groan some about inflation, too, and that is another ruse.  Inflation can be controlled with a few caps here and there.  So there would be no runaway inflation if they raised the rates a little.  At the current rates, everything is stopped dead still.  Our country cannot move.  It cannot grow and it cannot progress.  This is a simple fact.  And so it is dying slowly but surely, just a little bit at a time.  And nobody even knows it is going on because the ones in charge are masters of deceit.

All this hurts the investor, of course, but it also hurts the banks and the schools and the homeowners and all our families and everyone else who has a stake in this wonderful, marvelous capitalistic country.  Pay attention!  Vote Republican in November and watch this country begin to grow again.

VOTE  REPUBLICAN  for our country’s sake!

THE WAY IT WAS – PART TWO

1 07 2012

I brought up some things yesterday that had been the norm during the 1950’s. Earlier than that, very few people owned their own homes.  Almost everyone had to rent.  And what they rented was not all that great.  I know my in-laws lived in what I would have described as real dumps.  They laid their own linoleum floors and were always moving around trying to find a better place.  Not a good way to live.

My parents had rented for many years, but then they were finally able to buy their own house.  I remember going to look at the houses for sale.  One was really nice, but it cost $2,200. and they could not afford that one.  They settled on one that was not quite as nice, but still was o.k.  It only cost $2,000.  Payments were $16 a month.  My daddy borrowed the money from the group he worked with because I remember going by to make the payment every month.  He had a good job and was a good man.  Trustworthy, stable, and always taking good care of everyone.  There were my parents and three of us children.  Besides that, he had always taken good care of his mother.  As he said to me one time, she had no one else to take care of her so it was his job.  And he had done that since the age of 5 or 6.  His father had walked out and found someone else and my daddy was hung with providing for his mother.  If you would like to read more of that story, then order my book,  The Real Story for $10 plus $2 postage from Bet at P.O. Box 2249, Benton, AR  72018.   Enjoyment, pure enjoyment.

All us kids were expected to do well in school.  We were not straight A students but pretty close.  We did not get scholarships or anything like that, but we had a very good public school education.  That was back when they taught the necessary three R’s, if you remember, Reading, Writing and Arithmetic.  And we learned well.  All of us went to work upon graduation from high school.  I already had a job before I graduated.  Friday night was graduation and I went to work at 8 on Monday morning and was thrilled.  Was a great secretary.  Had a lot to learn, but learned well.  Worked for several years before starting a family.

My brother had worked from the time he was 14 or so.  He stuffed papers at the local newspaper office and delivered items and worked at general stuff.  Then he also had a full time sales job when he graduated from high school.  By that time, he had been working in sales for a local company for several years.  Now, it was just full time instead of part time.

My sister also went to work early.  In fact, when I was 14, my brother took me to a friend who was hiring for a candidate’s run for governor.  He hired me on the spot thinking I was 16 and I made enough money that year to pay for my own school clothes.  Then my sister, cousin and other friends and myself all got a job during the next governor’s race and had a really great summer.  At that time, everything that went out of the office had to be typed individually, so they needed lots of typists.  We all learned typing in school and were very good on those manual typewriters, so we were well paid and again, bought all our own school clothes.  Life was a lot of fun.  Challenging, full of education, and happiness.  Because we made it that way.

No one in my home argued a lot or had a lot of problems.  We just simply got along because we had to.  There were too many of us not to. We had chickens in the back yard and only one car, and rode the bus everywhere we went.  Wouldn’t have traded that life for anything.

I also have another book entitled #2503 which was our address.  My brother and sister wanted me to write about our growing up years and that was the title I chose.  Probably not a good one, but we all like it.  Same price and same address if you want that book also.  In fact, if you would like 3 books, they are only 3 for $25 plus the postage.  A third book is about the 1940’s and all the changes due to the World War II years.  Exciting, scary, and educational once again.  You will definitely enjoy all these books.  Thanks,  Bet

THANK YOU DEAR GOD FOR ALL THESE WONDERFUL INNOVATIONS

12 06 2012

I was driving on the highway this morning and  was looking on the sides of the road as I passed.    If you really take the time to look, it is absolutely wonderful what God has allowed to happen in this country of ours. As I have said before, when we need something in this world, God brings along someone who provides it.  Happens all the time.

Just take a look at the trucks rolling down the highway in front of you or beside you. They are absolute marvels.  Some carrying huge loads of pipe, bigger than I am.  Others carrying tractors or other heavy machinery. Some of these trucks are absolutely huge.  Who made up this great plan? Who was it that allowed someone to be able to come up with the idea to build that huge truck and be able to transport that huge piece of machinery from one location to another.  Someone had to do this, you know.  It just didn’t appear one day. Same with the highway you and that truck are driving on.  Had to come from somewhere.

And on the sides of the highway, take a look at the buildings and how well they are built to provide whatever that owner needs.  For instance, one car dealer had a whole front of windows. That could not have been done many years ago.  And those signs on the highway, take a look at what holds them up and those huge pieces of pipe that allow that sign to remain steady no matter the weather.  Someone had to come up with that idea also.

We live in a wonderful country.  I know there are those who think we wake up every day and wait for the sun to shine and then expect them to tell us how to live.  What makes them think they could do a better job than has already been done in a lot of instances.  I am so proud of everything I see.  This is a great country and we have so many innovations here.  We are such a fortunate society.  Almost anything we could desire is available if we just get out and work for it.

Even the everyday car  is absolutely marvelous.  Who would have thought a few years ago that automatic windows, doors, locks, air conditioning and heat would be available at the flick of a switch.  And  now people talk on their phone installed in the car and all they have to do is push a button.  And then just push another button and the garage door opens and closes for you.

In another 10 years, we cannot even begin to imagine what a wonderful place this will be.  I haven’t even mentioned anything like those wonderful phones and computers and calculators, and all those other marvelous inventions.  Someone had to form the idea and then assemble each one of them for the first time.  And someone had to give them the idea in their head first.  God helps all that along.  He is the One in charge of our lives.  He is the One who provides everything for all of us.

Next time you have the privilege of seeing an earth mover digging somewhere, take a moment to think about it.   Someone had to have the idea for the machine. Another person had to put it together and another has to drive it.  Then before they do any earth moving at all, someone has to assemble all the facts and figure exactly where and how that earth is to be moved.  This in itself is more than my brain can handle.   This one job has to be done perfectly.  If not, then that building will not be on a lot correctly which would cause all sorts of problems.  Or that highway cannot be built correctly which would cause even more problems.  Or that sewer ditch will not be where it should be and we can only imagine what problems that would cause.  And then we could go on and on about all the things that depend upon this one job being done right.

So think about all this next time you go outside and that doesn’t even include anything inside your home or business or automobile.  Think how smart this bunch of people who live in this country are. Each and every one contributes or should contribute to this wonderful way of life.  I cannot even imagine anyone thinking they can tell all others how to do anything.  We all have our place in this life.  Take your proper place and you will find happiness and success in your daily life.

God will provide the drive and the interest and the proper place for you in this world.  Take advantage of His Goodness.

HAVE A NICE DAY!

7 06 2012

I hear the phrase, Have a Nice Day at least once or twice each day.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we all really did Have a Nice Day.  I’m talking about if we all were really, really, really nice for a whole day.  Just think what that would do to this worn out old world.  I’m sure if you are like me, you are just simply sick and tired of all the stuff on the television and all the stuff in the newspapers and all that other stuff about how awful this whole world is.

People are killing each other wholesale across on the other side of the world.  Even in this area of the country, there are numerous killings every day.  And they are reported on the television constantly.   And right after that one is the story about the pornographic problems with grown people abusing children.  That is also on the television and in the newspapers constantly.  What is the matter with people.  Something most certainly is.  I mean, this is not really normal behavior.  Period.  And everyone knows this.

So, to get back to the nice day, wouldn’t it be nice if we as individuals tried just for one whole day to be nice. All day.  To everyone we meet.  No matter who or where.  If you think this is a good idea, make a point of smiling at the people you pass in the grocery store and in the post office and even in the local WalMart.  And besides that, hold the door for the person behind you as they come in or out.  And then, speak nicely to the clerk.  You don’t have to carry on a big conversation, just simply smile and act NICE.

And then in your own home, try really hard to be extra nice for one whole day.  When the kids drive you crazy, smile or laugh at their jokes, or you might even have to sing to overcome the noise.  But do it!  When you drive, make a point of letting that car turn in front of you or allowing someone to pass you when they need to.  Just pay attention and let those little niceties cover you up for just one whole day.

If there is someone at work that drives you nuts, try to be extra nice on that one day.  When you pay the parking attendant, smile and say thanks.  It doesn’t take a whole lot just to be nice for a whole day.

Just make a point of being extra nice to everyone for one whole day.  Then you can really smile and say HAVE A NICE DAY! because you mean it.

Might even do that again some day.  It might be sort of fun.

LIAR LIAR PANTS ON FIRE!

22 03 2012

Do you remember that from when you were a kid?  I do.  Seems like someone was chanting that now and then at some other kid  Never knew why particularly, but still remember hearing it.

A Democratic Senator was speaking at a luncheon this past week and made the comment that the gas prices would go down just as soon as the election was over.  Now, I would like to know exactly how this educated, smart Senator could possibly know this.  He continued that it was all due to politics.  Again, how would he know that. Seems sort of fishy to me that he could stand before people and make this comment when supposedly the oil crisis which has resulted in higher gas prices is supposed to be strictly because of prices elsewhere in the world.  And blamed on the big oil companies of course.  So how could the Senator have any say about it at all.  Could it be that the Democrats have raised the prices in order to promote their energy policies so everyone will think that if we just go more to the green stuff, then gas prices will come down.

I note on the television news today that the Democrats are pushing the green ideas right now.  They think that if they channel the sun and the wind and whatever else they think they are in charge of, then they can control the world.  They have forgotten that God alone controls the wind and the sun and all the other stuff of this earth.  And He will be the Only One who will decide exactly what and when we will be able to use it.  As I have said in previous blogs, God is in complete control of His world. And He has provided for us up to this point.  What makes all these so-called smart people think they are in charge of anything.

In the 1920’s and 30’s, who could have even imagined the IPhone.  Who would ever have thought of the airplanes we fly on today or the cars we drive.  Who could have imagined the computers and the fact that I can write on this machine and you can read it today.

Watch who you vote for this year.  The Democrats are deliberately trying to destroy our way of life so they can run all our lives and tell us exactly how and when we should live.  As I have also written before in blogs, learn about Hitler and then watch what is going on in your world of today.  You would think he was back once again.  His policies certainly are.

Be sure and vote for the Republicans – all of them – in your area.  I will vote straight Republican this year and forever more.  Never vote for a Democrat again.  Certainly not for that one that says the gas prices will go down just as soon as the election is over.  And that leads to another blog tomorrow.

DEAR GOD: THANK YOU FOR THE RIGHT TO MAKE UP OUR OWN MINDS

28 02 2012

To me, this is one of the most important things in life – the right to make up our own minds – about everything.  Almost nowhere in this world do people have this right.  And it is one we take for granted every single day.  We can like a product or not.  We can choose to buy it if we like it.  Or we can simply forget all about it.  We can decide who we want to like and who we want to talk to and who we want to be friends with and how deep that friendship might be.

For instance, I may not like my neighbor and I don’t have to feel bad about that.  He may not like me either and it doesn’t matter.  We can still be friendly.  That is our right.  This is one of those God Given Rights, the right to be ourselves.  And we have the right to live by our own convictions.  W don’t have to agree on politics or even the weather.  This is strictly up to us as individuals.  Be thankful you have this right.

I really did like George W. Bush as our President and thought he did a very good job considering what he faced both in his earlier years and after 9/11.  But then I was talking to a lady who was more liberal than I am.  I could not believe the venom that leaked  out of her mouth as she talked about George Bush and his Presidency. I could not believe the trash she had heard from the media and had believed. I searched and found the truth for myself.  So I could make up my own mind.

The day the Democrats took over the Congress was January 3, 2007.  That was the start of the 110th Congress. The Democrats now controlled a majority in both chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate.  This was in the middle of George Bush’ second term in office.  After that time, everything went downhill.  George Bush had set a record of 52 straight months of job creation!  The DOW Jones closed at 12,621.77, the GDP for the previous quarter was 3.5% and the UNEMPLOYMENT RATE WAS A MERE 4.6%   I haven’t heard anyone blame that on Bush!

But then, Barney Frank took over the House Financial Services Committee and Chris Dodd took over the Senate Banking Committee.  And that was the end of prosperity as we knew it at the time.  After Barney Frank and Chris Dodd got their hands on the financial and banking, we went straight down to a crisis.  They dumped at least 5 TRILLION Dollars of toxic loans on the economy from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac since they were in charge.

Meanwhile, Bush asked   17 TIMES  to stop Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac because they were becoming financially risky for the U.S. Economy. But the Democrats did not listen and the country fell on hard economic times.  The DOW Jones fell dramatically.  The Unemployment Rate shot up to almost 10% at one time and the GDP lost its footing.   The banks were pushing people into loans they could not afford.  For instance, if a couple wanted a loan for a $100,000 house, they would be told they could afford one for $200,000, so why not.  They could do all this with no money down and live that good life beginning today. Everyone could qualify, too.  Just ask and it is yours.

We bought our first house for $10,000. In order to get a loan from the FHA, we paid $1,500 as our downpayment. This made us more appreciative of what we were buying and believe me, we weren’t going to take on more payments than we could afford.  We were lucky to be able to do that much, not more.

At that time, the Congress was voting the DEMOCRAT way.  And those Democrats fought against reforming Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.  If it was hurting our country, so what.  We can always blame it on Bush later.  Meanwhile, we can act like we don’t know what happened.  Well, what happened was a lot of crooked, under handed foolery that cost a lot of people their homes and their livelihood.

The media was falling in line as usual, too, praising the Democrats and bullying President Bush. When President Bush left office after two terms, the deficit in this country  was the lowest in five years, and we had low, low  spending. After that, the Democrats took over the spending and you can see where we are today.

Yay!  George.  Wish he was back again.  Maybe then, we wouldn’t have to contend with all this economic mess we have had to deal with since the Democrats took over.  Maybe we wouldn’t have to put up with any more people like Barney Frank and Chris Dodd.  Maybe, just maybe, there could be a time again when people are honest and forthright in their dealings with each other.

I sure hope so.  Meanwhile, Thank You, Dear God for allowing me to make up my own mind.
